Ola Fred:

All
Several of you have been asking about Roger G3SXW, so now is probably a good time to give an update.

As a reminder, Roger fell from a ladder in late October last year and was admitted to hospital with heavy body bruising but more worryingly, a nasty blow to the rear of his head.

He is still in the same hospital and recently transferred to a specialist neurological unit (at St. George's Hospital, Tooting). His head injury was initially the primary concern - after the accident he went through a stage of not being able to speak for several weeks; when he came through that it was clear for several further weeks that he was hallucinating, imagining people and places and events. Although in good spirits, conversational and with a sharp memory for people and events prior to the accident, he was very confused and disorientated.

He's still confused about the lapse of time but now appears to have largely recovered from the hallucinations and imaginary events. He tells me that he's starting to recognise the unreal images and that their frequency is diminishing - so it sounds like the brain injury is starting to recover at last.

From not being able to walk after the accident, Roger has started building a little strength through regular physiotherapy sessions. He can't walk without a walking frame and needs someone nearby watching over him, however he can now shuffle around and get himself to the bathroom. He has lost a lot of weight while in hospital and will need to bring his strength back up over time.

Aside from the physical recovery, the other main concern is his eyesight - he tells me that images are blurred and he can't see things in the lower line of vision. Although his son has given him an iPhone, he can't operate it because he can't see it properly.

It's hard to say when Roger will leave hospital, or even whether he will make a full recovery, however he's in good spirits and has been really uplifted by the messages, emails and cards of goodwill I've passed onto him from the ham radio community. He really has got quite emotional over the love and goodwill that's been sent.

Aside from my recent trip to Costa Rica I've continued to visit Roger on a weekly basis (as have several other nearby ham friends). He himself feels that progress is slow but I keep reminding him that there have been steady improvements over the weeks.

Roger agreed to a photo being taken today and I've put it here: Roger G3SXW <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0012fL-V3DjMP0XmeINvJw6UkH3iLGeP0hHiQqeagRCu8rp4Kkez8-8qtYN5JMU-aXuBrHmxJGTSQB5MMLLxk_hNuDyeBaXtm36bZj-q8sd6_Y2AiPrpJL0VZd0TyN2eOQZLmQz123dapjWqIq0cOvHZf364nvCy7-xlyY1bQoggeA=&c=VYwuABkc5v4KiBmBZyeG_EPqz13i86VovcQWoLXGQuLLObsLVaW4Ew==&ch=Ki4Tf5IdBvGhcfaaQ5Fh-1-fPkPmMC35rmmaJCTCCD2WzRnoMwRTkg==> - I'm happy to continue receiving messages for Roger and will pass them on when I visit. They certainly help him - many thanks for those already sent.

73 John G4IRN.
